In an effort to reduce debt burdens on Illinois citizens as well as encourage parents to make their child support payments, the State of Illinois has implemented the Clean Slate Program. The Clean Slate Program is an initiative to help parents erase child support debts owed to the State of Illinois.
In this program, a parent who misses child support payments owed to the State of Illinois can have both the debt, including interest, and any record of the missed payments removed after successfully making 6 months of child support payments to the State of Illinois. For parents who miss payments for whatever reason, this program can provide financial freedom to individuals who need it most.
To qualify for the program, a parent owing past due child support must:
(2) Show that the child support payments were court-ordered,
(3) Show that the parent was unable to make payments because they were:
(b) incarcerated, or
(c) suffering from a serious illness that prevented them from making payments; and
(4) Show proof of income or ability to pay.
After making 6 regularly ordered payments, the past due child support debt owed to the State of Illinois is permanently removed. Payments owed directly to the other parent are still enforceable by that parent.
